In preparation for the lecture tomorrow night and our class on Monday, here are a few questions about A Long Way Gone to think about. Maybe hearing Ishmael in person will give even more insight to these than the book alone.
- Once Beah becomes a resident of the UNICEF relief camp he struggles with the relief workers’ gestures of kindness. How do you think his experiences in the war affected his ability to trust others?
- How have Ishmael Beah’s accounts changed your perception of war, past or present?
- What universal truths does Ishmael Beah’s book teach us about surviving loss and hunger, and overcoming isolation?

According to dictionary.com, accountability is “the state of being accountable, liable, or answerable” To me this means that accountability is similar to responsibility. When you are accountable for something you need to take responsibility of actions or tasks. Something I am accountable for is my school work. I am accountable for doing well and attending classes.
Responsibility is taking complete charge of your own actions. When one is not responsible, one loses trust from others. Responsibility connects with time management which associates with college and thus it is very important to be responsible.

You’ve probably already noticed that the demands of college require you to practice effective time management. According to the 6th edition of Your College Experience, two of the biggest differences between high school and college are increased independence and greater responsibility.
In preparation for our time management class next week, take a few moments to think about what you’ve already experienced as a university freshman that’s forcing you to plan your time better.
Choose one of these questions below to respond to in a blog post of your own:
- Do I procrastinate? Does whether I procrastinate depend on the task?
- How do I prioritize my time? Do I value social activities or goofing off more than studying?
- What are my most productive times of the day? Morning? Evening? How can I use those times most effectively?
- How conscious am I of time passing? Do I always wear a watch?
- Am I easily distracted?
- How does my use of time affect my stress level? Does my anxiety about getting work done on time (or not) affect the quality of my work?
Resource: All questions from Your College Experience: Strategies for Success (6th Edition).
